Here at the Forest Park Conservancy our mission is twofold: foster the stewardship of Forest Park’s trails and restore its forest for the health of our city and our region. That is why we’re thrilled to announce the completion of our summer-long Wildwood Trail improvement project and some exciting new volunteer opportunities for the coming restoration season.
This summer, FPC field staff and volunteers rallied together to rebuild a section of the Wildwood Trail that for past several years has seen a lot of use, but not enough love. Close in to town and conveniently linked for making loops, the stretch of Wildwood Trail between Wild Cherry and Dogwood is a favorite route for many hikers and runners.
Fixing up this notoriously muddy stretch of trail was an ambitious undertaking made possible thanks to a grant from Metro Regional Government. Over the course of ten volunteer work parties, 190 volunteers helped rebuild 300 feet of eroded trail, uproot 400 feet of worn out erosion control fabric, and re-grade 1200 feet of tread to improve water drainage and walkability.
Now that summer is ending and trail repair projects are wrapping up, we’re gearing up for a busy season of habitat restoration. This fall we’re excited to announce a brand new volunteer opportunity!
