Title:  Technical Field Assistant – Canopy Weeds

Reports to:  Program Manager

Work Schedule: 5 days/week, 40 hours/week, 8am – 4pm


THE ORGANIZATION
 

The Forest Park Conservancy protects and fosters the ecological health of Forest Park, maintains and enhances the park’s extensive trails network, and inspires community appreciation and future stewardship as a gift for generations. Each year, we work with 1,500 volunteers to maintain trails, remove invasive species and plant native trees and shrubs. The Forest Park Conservancy is leading a 20-year strategy called the Greater Forest Park Conservation Initiative to restore 15,000 acres of public and private lands to ensure the long-term health of Forest Park.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Technical Field Assistant – Canopy Weeds position is responsible for identifying and manually removing invasive weeds from native trees, primarily on private properties along the perimeter of Forest Park. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Identify and manually remove invasive weeds (Hedera HelixHedera Hibernica and Clematis Vitalba) from trees that are negatively impacted by their growth. 
  • Use GPS tools to ensure restoration work occurs only on properties that have agreed to and signed the “Permission to access land and treat target weeds” contract. 
  • Occasionally, inform the public about the goals of the Canopy Weeds program and specifics of their duties. 
  • Complete a Daily Project Report form, noting properties worked on, number of trees freed of ivy from each property, and any important information about the site.

FPC is the leading nonprofit dedicated to restoring and protecting Forest Park. We are committed to collaboration in all of our work. The Field Assistant should be flexible, helpful and a good communicator. This individual should be organized, hardworking and able to plan and think holistically in an outdoor, natural area setting. This individual should be comfortable with hand tools, small power equipment, traveling through the outdoors and working in all weather conditions and terrain.

Compensation and Duration 

$15/hour, 40 hours/week

This position runs from January 15th – April 27th
