What a year it’s been for Forest Park and the Forest Park Conservancy. More than 1,500 volunteers turned out in all kinds of weather to take care of our beloved urban forest. And more than 1,200 people made financial contributions to support our work.
Simply put, without you, Forest Park would not be nearly as healthy as it is and the trails wouldn’t be nearly as much fun. Thank you!
In the past year we:
- Raked 25 miles of trail, which is like going round trip from Forest Park to the Tualatin Hills Nature Park and back!
- Brushed overgrowth on 49 miles of trail, which is equivalent to going from Forest Park to the state capitol in Salem, Oregon
- Removed 120,000 square feet of ivy. That much ivy would fill 14 baseball diamonds!
- Hauled more than 23 tons of material needed to improve trails which is equal to more than 15,000 text books!
And this isn’t all we’ve done. In addition we:
- Repaired nearly 1.5 miles of trail
- Planted more than 1,200 native shrubs and trees
- Pulled ivy from 6,000 trees
- Cleared debris from 21 miles of culverts and drains
But, there’s more we must do to restore and protect Forest Park. Each year, FPC maintains 47 of the 80 miles of trail in Forest Park. We restore habitat to ensure wildlife can thrive. And, our leadership of the Greater Forest Park Conservation Initiative is protecting Forest Park and 10,000 acres surrounding the park.
All of our work is essential to ensuring Forest Park can withstand the threats from climate change, urban growth and invasive plants. We have big plans for 2019 including:
- Trail improvement projects on the Wildwood
- Launch an Ambassador Program
- Strengthen our 1,500-person volunteer program
- Remove ivy from more than 6,000 trees in and outside of Forest Park
