Overheard...

I had an absolutely terrific time working on the bridge on Saturday. Truth be told, I was sore, but again it was so fun and gratifying!

Mountain Biking in Forest Park

Information on mountain biking in Forest Park

Where to go:

The following Forest Park trails and firelanes are open to bicyclists: forest park 002.jpgLeif Erikson Road, Saltzman Road, Springville Road, BPA Road, Newton Street, Firelanes 1,3,5,10,12, 15 & Holman Lane (uphill only).

All other trails and roads in Forest Park are closed to bicycles. Thank you for respecting these trails and the pedestrians that use them.

Please consult a map of Forest Park for more information on access and routes.

Enjoy biking in Forest Park by following some tips from Portland United Mountain Pedalers (PUMP):

Riding Tips for Forest Park

To help us all enjoy this Portland treasure for many years to come, please follow these riding tips:

Ride only where bikes are permitted If a route is not shown on the mountain biking map, it is not open to bicycles. Whether it is to protect the trails and/or the environment, or for rider safety, a closed trail is off limits for a reason. Riding closed trails is not only illegal, it endangers the future of bicycles in Forest Park.

Control your speed and show courtesy to other users Just like a busy highway, a crowded trail means you must move slowly to ensure safety for all trail users. Slow down when approaching other trail users and respectfully make others aware that you are approaching. Pass with care and be prepared to stop if necessary. Remember: mountain bikers should yield to hikers and equestrians.

Respect the trail, wildlife, and environment

  • Don't skid or ride on trails when they are muddy. It causes unnecessary trail widening and erosion, creates more work for those who maintain the trails, and may lead to long-lasting damage.
  • Do not ride off-trail, as this will damage the ecosystem and spread the seeds of invasive plants.
  • Do not widen the trail to avoid obstacles. Carry your bike over obstacles if you cannot ride over them.

Participate only in authorized trail maintenance Unauthorized or illegal trail work may lead to environmental damage, injury, or even trail closure. Contact Friends of Forest Park or PUMP to join work parties.

The Forest Park Mountain Biking Map

This project could not have happened without the dedicated work of Friends of Forest Park volunteers. The Forest Park Bike Map was made possible thanks to a grant from the Mazamas Conservation Committee and the work of Portland United Mountain Pedalers (PUMP).

The Forest Park Mountain Biking Map (2.6 MB)

Friends of Forest Park encourages you to print this map for your personal use and for distribution. Enjoy the mountain biking opportunities in the park through awareness of the permitted trails open to bicycles.

The mountain bike map is a two-page PDF file with a page size of 11x17 inches, but it will print clearly on one 8.5x11 inch page.

Tips for photocoyping the Mountain Biking Map:
The grey scale items (streams, power-lines and the intersection inset) laser copy fine but may be lost when photocopied.
A solution for the photocopy issue is to set the copy machine to have the text mode set to the darkest setting. This will solve most of the loss except for the Leif Erikson/Saltzman intersection inset grey (the insides of the circles.) The outline of the circle remains intact so the illustration will be visible.
