Wrapping Up Another Big Season Removing Canopy Weeds

Forest Park ConservancyUncategorized

Through all of the rain, hail, wind and cold, this year’s Canopy Weeds Crew did an outstanding job! More than 5,000 trees are now free of invasive ivy on land just outside of Forest Park. This is so important because not only does this invasive species kill trees by toppling them to the ground, but their seeds also help spread this nasty plant throughout Forest Park! Invasive plants are one of the greatest threats to the health of Forest Park.

Thanks to funding from the West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, METRO Regional Government, and the Oregon Department of Forestry, we were able to remove invasive ivy from 35 properties this year. All told, since initiating this program in 2011, we’ve removed ivy from more than 20,000 trees in the greater Forest Park ecosystem!

This is a key strategy in the fight to keep invasive species, especially English ivy, from doing more damage. Through this program we not only help restore habitat outside of the park, but we also reduce the amount of ivy in Forest Park because tree ivy is one of the main culprits in the spread of this invasive plant.

As FPC’s Program Manager, Cody Chambers, says: “Everyone wins with this program. From the property owners to nature lovers to native plants and wildlife, this program is making a big difference inside and outside of Forest Park.”
