What helps identfify Portland is its parks. More than anything else, it's Forest Park...it establishes the geography of the city and it ties us to our history of settlement. It shaped the city, and it still shapes the city's personality"

- Chet Orloff, historian and chair of Portland Parks and Recreation Board

Laura Foster guided hike

Hike description: Beginning at the Springville Road trailhead, we will hike downhill through Forest Park to the hidden Whitwood Court neighborhood. We will then cross the iconic St. John’s Bridge into the hamlet of St. Johns, where we’ll stop for refreshments at Anna Banana’s before climbing back up through the cathedral-like forest. This hike is a loop.

Cost: $10 (free for members of the Forest Park Conservancy)

Pre-registration is requested, as enrollment will be limited to 12 participants, with space being filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Hike Leader Biography: Laura O. Foster is the author of Portland Hill Walks: Twenty Explorations in Parks and Neighborhoods (Timber Press). It was chosen by the City of Portland in 2006 as a gift to Northeast Portland residents to encourage alternative transportation. When not writing or walking about Portland and surrounding towns, Laura Foster works as a freelance book editor and ghostwriter. She also leads walking tours and presents slide shows on historic neighborhoods. Laura has been a Portland resident since 1989
